Chrono Trigger: Celebrating 30 Years and 5 Million Sales

2025-03-24 00:50:13

Chrono Trigger, a beloved role-playing game from the 16-bit era, has reached an impressive milestone, selling over 5 million units.  2025 marks the 30th anniversary of its Japanese release, making this sales achievement a significant highlight of its enduring legacy.

At its core, Chrono Trigger is a time travel adventure. Players control a group of heroes from various eras, journeying through time to prevent a catastrophic event orchestrated by the menacing entity known as Lavos. Released in 1995 to widespread acclaim, Chrono Trigger was praised for its engaging narrative, where player choices could alter different time periods, and its innovative combat system featuring character-specific timers.

Chrono Trigger remains a cornerstone of JRPG discussions. Its influence is undeniable, with Square Enix's Japanese website recently announcing the 5 million units shipped globally. While this number may seem modest compared to modern blockbusters, considering its release period and standalone nature, it solidifies Chrono Trigger's status as a highly influential SNES title.

The game's 30th anniversary coincided with its original Super Famicon release in Japan on March 11th, preceding its North American launch on August 11th, 1995.  Over the years, Chrono Trigger has seen ports to PlayStation, Nintendo DS, mobile, and PC. However, it has remained largely untouched by its publisher and developer since early 2018.  This is expected to change in 2025, with Square Enix teasing "various projects that go beyond the world of the game" to thank loyal fans.

While the nature of these projects remains undisclosed,  many fans anticipate a remaster for modern consoles.  The anniversary timing seems ideal for such an announcement, particularly given Square Enix's recent remasters of classic Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles. Coincidentally, Konami, a former rival RPG developer, recently released the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster, reviving another beloved 1995 RPG series.
