PlayStation Tests New Message Moderation Feature on Mobile App

Sony is taking further steps to combat offensive content on its PlayStation platform by introducing a new message filtering feature on its mobile app.  This feature, currently being tested with a select group of users, allows players to review their messages before sending them and potentially revise any content flagged as potentially offensive.

This move comes as part of Sony's ongoing efforts to improve content moderation on its systems, particularly as the PlayStation App continues to grow and evolve alongside its popular PS5 console.  With the PS5 and PS5 Pro demonstrating strong sales figures, outpacing competitors like the Xbox Series X/S, maintaining a healthy and respectful online environment has become increasingly crucial.

The new feature, reportedly called "Nudge," automatically analyzes messages for potentially harmful language. If detected, the user is prompted to review the content and given the opportunity to edit it before sending.  While users retain the option to send the original message, doing so subjects it to standard moderation procedures if reported by the recipient.

This isn't the first time Sony has addressed content moderation.  Upon the PS5's release, the company implemented voice chat recording for moderation purposes, requiring user consent.  Beyond message moderation, Sony has also explored other avenues to improve user feedback, such as a system for posting written game reviews similar to Steam's review system, although this feature hasn't been fully implemented yet.

These efforts reflect Sony's broader strategy to refine user interactions and foster a positive online community, especially as the company prepares for upcoming high-profile game releases anticipated to attract even more players to the PlayStation ecosystem.  With titles like Naughty Dog's new IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophecy, and other upcoming releases like Ghost of Yotei,  Sony is committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for its growing player base.
