A New Plants vs. Zombies Game Might Be Sprouting Soon

Whispers of a potential Plants vs. Zombies resurgence are making the rounds, hinting at a possible return to consoles, PC, and mobile platforms.  An age rating for a Plants vs. Zombies project recently surfaced in Brazil, fueling speculation about a fresh installment in the long-running franchise.

The original Plants vs. Zombies, launched by PopCap Games for PC in 2009 and later ported to other devices, remains a cherished classic in the tower defense genre.  Its charming, cartoonish zombies and diverse arsenal of plant-based defenses, from pea-shooting sprouts to explosive potatoes, captivated players worldwide. The game's success quickly eclipsed other PopCap titles like Bejeweled and Peggle, leading to sequels and spin-offs.

Details about a previously canceled Plants vs. Zombies game have also emerged, revealing an ambitious project that aimed to take the series in a new direction. This canceled game reportedly involved a larger scale adventure, showcasing a fresh perspective for the franchise.

The Brazilian Ministry of Justice and Public Security initially listed the project as "Plants vs. Zombies or Plants vs. Zombies Reloaded." However, the listing has since been updated to simply "Plants vs. Zombies." While details remain scarce, the listing mentions an interactive online shopping element and a free classification, suggesting no age restrictions. While the core series is known for its tower defense gameplay, previous spin-offs have explored different genres, such as the third-person shooter Battle for Neighborville and the card game Plants vs. Zombies: Heroes.

The reception of a new Plants vs. Zombies game at this point in the franchise's lifecycle is uncertain. Plants vs. Zombies 3, fully released in 2024 after a soft launch in 2020, received a lukewarm response compared to its predecessors. Some criticisms pointed to the reduced number of available plants (down to 64 from over 200 in Plants vs. Zombies 2) and the perceived excessive length of the game.

More recent spin-offs have also struggled to recapture the magic of the original games.  While Battle for Neighborville initially received positive reviews from critics, player feedback was mixed, with many considering it a step back from Garden Warfare 2.
