Masahiro Sakurai Encourages Japanese Developers to Prioritize Domestic Tastes
2025-03-18 21:13:40Renowned game designer Masahiro Sakurai, creator of iconic titles like Super Smash Bros and Kirby, recently suggested that Japanese developers should prioritize creating games tailored to Japanese preferences, rather than attempting to cater to Western audiences.
Earlier this month, Sakurai was honored with the prestigious Arts Encouragement Award by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs, recognizing his contributions to the industry, particularly his insightful YouTube series, "Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games."
Following the award ceremony, Sakurai shared his perspective on game development in an interview with Japanese entertainment news site Entax (reported by Automaton). He expressed his belief that Japanese studios should prioritize the tastes of their domestic audience rather than attempting to emulate Western market trends.
He explained, "There used to be a culture of making Americanized products, because various works were popular in America. However, I don't think overseas 'Japanese game fans' are looking for that kind of thing, but rather something unique and interesting from Japan."
Sakurai continued, "In other words, I believe the ideal approach is to create games according to your own vision, as those who resonate with your perspective will appreciate them."
This sentiment has resonated with some Western players. One commenter expressed agreement, stating, "He's completely right. We've seen far too much of this with the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. Much of it feels blatantly intended to cater to what is prevalent in the West rather than focusing on what matters most to the narrative itself."
