Rumors are swirling about the potential return of a fan-favorite controller from the GameCube era. A newly discovered FCC filing hints at possible support for the iconic controller on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, further amplifying the anticipation surrounding the new console.

The GameCube controller holds a special place in many gamers' hearts, particularly among Super Smash Bros. players.  Considering Nintendo's history of revitalizing classic controllers, like the NES gamepad, by releasing modern wireless versions, the emergence of a GameCube controller for the Switch 2 wouldn't be a surprise. This is despite existing versions for the original Switch, which are presumed to be compatible with the new console.

As reported by Nintendo Life, a new FCC filing details a "game controller" bearing the model number prefix "BEE," a designation consistent with the Switch 2. The document also confirms that this device will be a "wireless Bluetooth controller" and includes some rudimentary images.  These details have ignited speculation, particularly within the Famiboards community. Users have noted that one image, illustrating label placement on the back, resembles the rear of a GameCube controller near the C-Stick.  Initial speculation suggested this might be the Switch 2 Pro Controller. However, this theory has been largely dismissed due to the apparent lack of NFC functionality, which has been confirmed for other upcoming accessories in a separate filing from last week.

Throughout the Nintendo Switch's lifecycle, GameCube titles have been conspicuously absent from the Nintendo Switch Online service. This contrasts with other classic consoles like the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy, which have a significant presence. However, rumors suggest this could change with the Switch 2, potentially expanding the GameCube controller's utility beyond Super Smash Bros.  In the meantime, fans can anticipate confirmed Switch 2 releases like the next Mario Kart installment, PowerWash Simulator 2, My Time at Evershine, and Fur Squadron Phoenix.

Nintendo remains tight-lipped about the official Switch 2 release date, though speculation points towards the first half of 2025. While an initial March release was anticipated by many, the upcoming Nintendo Direct on April 2nd suggests a May or June launch is more plausible. A holiday release later in the year remains a possibility. The Nintendo Switch 2 is rumored to retail between $399 and $499, potentially making it Nintendo's priciest console to date.
