In a surprise move, Microsoft has added the hit game Balatro to Xbox Game Pass. While the company typically announces new additions in advance, this 'shadow drop' follows a recent trend, reminiscent of Hi-Fi Rush's surprise launch in early 2023 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black's more recent unannounced arrival.

For those unfamiliar, Balatro ingeniously blends elements of poker, roguelikes, and deckbuilding games to create a captivating experience. Released last year, the game quickly garnered widespread acclaim, selling millions and earning glowing reviews.  Its impressive 92 overall rating solidifies its position among the highest-rated games ever, and certainly among the best of 2024.  Its addition to Xbox Game Pass allows subscribers to enjoy this standout title as part of their existing subscription.

The surprise release coincides with the launch of the latest 'Friends of Jimbo' update, introducing themed cards based on various popular franchises, including Friday the 13th, Civilization, Assassin's Creed, Bugsnax, Slay the Princess, Fallout, and more.  This new content is available to all Balatro players, regardless of platform.
