Tekken 8 Season 2 Throw Change Sparks Controversy Among Players

2025-03-25 09:40:26

The Tekken 8 community is currently grappling with a controversial change coming to throws in Season 2. The update will introduce chip damage to broken throws, meaning even successfully blocking a throw will result in slight damage. This change has sparked considerable debate among players, many of whom are questioning the decision by game director Katsuhiro Harada.

Season 2 is also bringing exciting new content.  Fan-favorite character Anna Williams returns as DLC on April 3rd (March 31st for Character Year 2 Pass holders).  A new Pac-Man 45th anniversary stage and free Atelier Yumia collaboration DLC are also on the horizon, alongside several paid returning DLC characters. This roadmap was revealed during the March 23rd edition of "Tekken Talk Live," which also showcased Anna's gameplay.

Despite the positive additions, the throw change remains a sticking point. Following the "Tekken Talk Live" announcement, players voiced their concerns on platforms like Reddit.  While the chip damage from broken throws is minimal, many argue it punishes defensive play and devalues the skill required to break throws. This contradicts Harada's previous statements about Season 2 focusing on enhanced defensive options.

The change has created a sense of uncertainty within the community. Some players are losing confidence in Harada's vision, while others worry that the game's already aggressive meta will become even more pronounced, potentially negatively impacting the competitive scene throughout Season 2.  However, with numerous gameplay changes yet to be detailed, there remains a possibility of further balancing adjustments that could mitigate the impact of the throw change.

Tekken 8 Season 2 is scheduled to run through 2025, culminating in the release of the final DLC character and stage in winter. The game is also set to be a main title at EVO 2025, alongside other prominent fighting games like Street Fighter 6 and Guilty Gear Strive.  The meta is expected to evolve throughout the season with character balance updates and the introduction of new DLC fighters.
