Reports indicate that the iconic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) could be making its way to Xbox Game Pass. Sources suggest a potential release window of late winter or early spring 2024, further expanding the growing library of Call of Duty titles available on the subscription service.

This follows Microsoft's monumental $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, completed in October 2023. Since then, Xbox Game Pass has welcomed several Call of Duty entries, beginning with Modern Warfare 3 (2023) in July, followed by Black Ops 6 three months later—marking the franchise's first day-one release on the platform.

Whispers of additional classic Call of Duty titles joining Xbox Game Pass are circulating within the gaming community. XboxEra, citing anonymous sources, reports that the original Modern Warfare 2 (2009), not the 2022 reboot, is slated for a March or April 2024 release on the service. Insider Gaming has independently corroborated this report with their own sources.

Questions remain regarding the content of this potential Xbox Game Pass version. While Beenox remastered the 2009 Modern Warfare 2's campaign for the 2022 reboot, the original's multiplayer component was absent. The 2009 version’s multiplayer servers on Steam were shut down in July 2023 due to malware concerns and remain offline.  Whether the potential Xbox Game Pass version will include multiplayer functionality is yet to be confirmed.

Activision typically unveils new Call of Duty titles in the spring.  A March or April release for Modern Warfare 2 on Game Pass could coincide with the 2025 Call of Duty game announcement. A March release seems more probable given the already confirmed April 2025 Game Pass releases of South of Midnight, Clais Obscur: Expedition 33, and Commandos: Origins.  Currently, Atomfall is the sole confirmed day-one title for March 2025.
