Hazelight Founder Defends EA Amidst Criticism, Praises Publisher's Support for Split Fiction
2025-03-17 21:05:23The successful launch of the cooperative adventure game Split Fiction has put developer Hazelight and its outspoken creative director, Josef Fares, back in the spotlight. Fares recently addressed accusations of Split Fiction being a 'woke' game and reaffirmed his commitment to avoiding microtransactions in their titles.
In a recent interview with Edge magazine, Fares continued his candid commentary, this time voicing his support for publisher Electronic Arts (EA). He argued that much of the criticism leveled at EA is "undeserved." Unlike experiences with other publishers, Fares explained, EA has never interfered with Hazelight's development process and has provided significant support.
Fares praised EA for trusting his vision and emphasized the mutual respect that underpins their successful partnership. "They never interfere," he stated. "Sometimes I think they get way too much undeserved shit. I don't know how they work with others, but in our case, they've been really good."
This positive endorsement comes at a crucial time for EA, given its often-controversial reputation among gamers, especially following the recent backlash over microtransactions in 'Skate'. Furthermore, the publisher has faced challenges in recent months, with the underwhelming performance of 'Dragon Age: Dreadwolf' adding to the financial pressure.
However, Split Fiction has provided a much-needed win for EA. Considering the success of Hazelight's previous titles, such as 'A Way Out', a continued partnership between EA and Hazelight seems highly likely.
