The video game company Fawkes is breathing new life into the post-apocalyptic MMO, Defiance.  With a motto focused on preserving the legacy of older games, Fawkes plans to relaunch Defiance for PC in April 2025. This is not their first foray into game revival, having previously resurrected titles like Shaiya and Last Chaos, while also holding the rights to Desert Operations and Wargame 1942.

Originally developed by Trion Worlds, Defiance was a third-person shooter MMO available on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. A later version, Defiance 2025, was released for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.  The game was also a transmedia project, tied to a Syfy television show of the same name that aired from 2013 to 2015.  Launched in 2013, Defiance transitioned to a free-to-play model in 2014 but ultimately shut down in 2021 under Gamigo's ownership.

Fawkes announced their plans in a blog post, confirming they've secured the worldwide development and publishing rights.  They emphasized a focus on creating a 'homecoming' experience for returning players.  The initial relaunch will target PC, but Fawkes has expressed interest in bringing Defiance back to consoles if the PC launch is successful.

Defiance once stood alongside popular free-to-play MMOs like Runescape, Guild Wars 2, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Fawkes acknowledges the game's special place in players' hearts and aims to honor that connection.

Fawkes' passion for reviving games echoes the efforts of companies like Nightdive Studios, known for their work on remasters of classic titles such as The Thing, Turok, and System Shock. Fawkes is committed to rebuilding Defiance with the community, emphasizing a collaborative approach to development and encouraging feedback through their Discord channel.

In Defiance, players become Ark Hunters, navigating a war-torn Earth after the arrival of the alien Votans. Known for its engaging combat and post-apocalyptic setting, Defiance offered players the opportunity to explore the San Francisco Bay Area, complete missions, and participate in challenges alongside other Ark Hunters.
