Insomniac Games Founder Ted Price Reflects on Evolving Game Development Landscape
2025-03-13 10:40:41After 30 years at the helm, Ted Price, CEO and co-founder of Insomniac Games, the studio behind hits like "Spyro the Dragon," "Ratchet & Clank," "Sunset Overdrive," and "Marvel's Spider-Man," is retiring in March. In a recent appearance on the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' "Game Maker's Notebook," Price shared his insights on the current state of game development.
Price observed, "Games have become enormous. Large companies have to think much more critically about scope and budget and how they increase efficiency while also satisfying player demands."
Price's outlook wasn't entirely pessimistic. "I don't think the fundamental agility has changed," he added. "Any company that's been developing games for a while can decide to move into another genre, learn it quickly, and deliver what players want."
However, he acknowledged the shifting landscape of risk. "The risk profile has changed dramatically. If you really want to hit the highest levels of quality in a particular area, it does require a greater investment of resources. That includes time, people, money, and that increases the risk."
