Hazelight Studios has struck gold again with Split Fiction, achieving a Metacritic score above 90 and becoming the first EA-published game in thirteen years to reach this milestone.  The last title to achieve such acclaim was Mass Effect 3 back in 2012, demonstrating the significance of Split Fiction's achievement.

Building upon the success of their Game of the Year award-winning title, It Takes Two, Hazelight continues to impress with its innovative co-op gameplay and captivating storytelling.  Released in March 2025, Split Fiction has already garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam, with players praising its mind-bending mechanics and unique co-op experience.

Developed by Hazelight Studios and published by Electronic Arts, Split Fiction is quickly gaining recognition as a potential Game of the Year candidate. While EA has published numerous successful titles like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, The Sims, and Titanfall, Split Fiction’s high praise marks a significant achievement for the publisher.

As highlighted by Twitter user Kami, Split Fiction's Metacritic score of over 90 surpasses even Bioware's critically acclaimed Mass Effect 3, which holds a score of 93. This accomplishment underscores the quality and innovation present in Hazelight's latest offering.

Contributing to Split Fiction's success is the return and enhancement of the Friends Pass feature, first introduced in It Takes Two.  This allows two players to enjoy the full co-op experience with only one copy of the game. Hazelight has further improved this feature by incorporating cross-play functionality, enabling friends on different platforms (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC) to seamlessly play together.

Though still early in the year, Split Fiction has emerged as a strong contender for Game of the Year. However, it faces stiff competition from other highly acclaimed titles like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds, which also boasts a Metacritic score of 90. With the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 also releasing in Fall 2025, the competition for Game of the Year will undoubtedly be fierce.
