Wonder Woman Game Cancellation: Inside the Tumultuous Development and Demise

Journalist Jason Schreier recently shed light on the cancellation of the Wonder Woman game and the subsequent closure of developer Monolith Productions during an appearance on the Kinda Funny Games podcast.  His insights reveal a complex and challenging development cycle plagued by setbacks.

One of the initially planned features for Wonder Woman was a 'reverse Nemesis system,' allowing players to build alliances with humans through conversation. This ambitious mechanic was ultimately scrapped during a game reboot.

Production on Wonder Woman reportedly began around May/June 2021 but underwent a significant reboot in late 2023. This involved a change in directors and a shift towards a more traditional God of War-style action-adventure format.

Monolith was apparently not keen on revisiting the Lord of the Rings (LOTR) franchise.  Following the cancellation of their new original IP by Warner Bros. in 2021, a significant portion of Monolith's leadership and development team departed.

The studio faced the daunting task of rebuilding its staff and leadership while simultaneously working on Wonder Woman – a situation described as 'an impossible scenario.'

Many former Monolith team members joined forces with EA to form Cliffhanger Games, the studio currently developing a Black Panther game.

The cancellation of Wonder Woman can be attributed to a disastrous 2024 for WB Games.  Reported losses of $200 million on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, coupled with another $100 million lost on MultiVersus and Quidditch Champions, combined with the Wonder Woman game's reboot, ultimately led to its cancellation, the studio's closure, and the dismissal of the CEO.

Monolith developers were reportedly blindsided by the studio's closure, learning about it on Tuesday, around the same time the news became public.
