Reports suggest the cancelled Wonder Woman game, developed by Monolith, may have shared similarities with the acclaimed God of War franchise.  The project, initially announced at The Game Awards 2021, generated considerable excitement among DC fans. However, subsequent silence and internal reshuffling fueled concerns about its future.

These fears materialized with the recent announcement of the game's cancellation, accompanied by the closure of three Warner Bros.-owned development studios, including Monolith. The disappointment among gamers is palpable, particularly considering the potential loss of Middle-earth's celebrated Nemesis System, which was rumored to be incorporated into the Wonder Woman game.

Insights from a comic book writer involved with the project offer a glimpse into the game's development. Bloomberg gaming reporter Jason Schreier revealed that the game's initial design incorporated a modified Nemesis System, allowing Wonder Woman to recruit NPCs as allies.  However, this approach was later abandoned in favor of a more traditional action game style reminiscent of God of War.

The cancellation of the Wonder Woman game was not the only setback for Monolith. Following the 2017 release of Middle-earth: Shadow of War, the studio began work on a new IP codenamed “Legacy.” This project reportedly incorporated elements of the Nemesis System and experimented with procedural narrative generation. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. cancelled “Legacy” after three years, seemingly due to a lack of interest in new IPs.  This decision triggered the departure of key Monolith staff, impacting subsequent projects, including the Wonder Woman game.

Warner Bros.'s gaming division has faced challenges in recent years, with titles like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus underperforming.  Cancelled projects based on DC characters like The Flash and John Constantine further highlight these difficulties. The Wonder Woman game joins the list of casualties, and it's likely more details about its troubled development will emerge as insiders share their accounts.
