DC's New Gaming Universe: Years Away But Promising

The new DC cinematic universe is set to launch later this year with the new Superman movie, and plans already sound promising. However, DC's gaming ventures have faced recent setbacks despite the acclaimed Batman Arkham series. Titles like Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad have struggled to meet expectations.

In an interview with IGN, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed that games set within the new DC Universe are in development, but are still "several years" away from release.

Safran stated, "We're working very closely with JB Perrette, who's the head of [Warner Bros. Discovery's Global Streaming & Games division]. This is really the first time that Warner Bros. has done this. James and I sit down with the studios under JB, including NetherRealm and Rocksteady, and talk about the characters and the stories that we’re both interested in, or that they're interested in."

This new DC Universe, overseen by Gunn and Safran, encompasses projects like the new Superman film, the animated Creature Commandos series, and the upcoming Batman and Robin film, The Brave and the Bold.  However, Matt Reeves' The Batman and its spin-offs, The Penguin and Clayface, exist separately.

Gunn added that they have seen early stages of these game projects and provided feedback on character development.  Safran emphasized the first DCU game is "a few years away" but confirmed their active involvement, stating, "We're very actively involved with a few upcoming things and it's really exciting."
