Former PlayStation Executive Reveals Why Ambitious Survival Game 'Wild' Was Cancelled
2025-02-09 17:02:31Former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida has disclosed the reasons behind the cancellation of the survival game *Wild*, which was being developed by Wild Sheep Studio and Ubisoft Paris.
In a YouTube interview with MinnMax, Yoshida reflected on projects announced during his tenure that were ultimately cancelled. Despite showcasing trailers at various events, Sony Interactive Entertainment couldn't bring these games to fruition. He expressed personal disappointment, noting the initial excitement surrounding these projects. Yoshida admitted he genuinely wished some of these games had made it to release.
When asked which cancellation stung the most, Yoshida highlighted Michel Ancel's *Wild*. He recalled crafting a "fantastic" vision with Ancel and his team, collaborating over multiple console generations. Ultimately, *Wild* had to be shelved, much to his disappointment.
According to Yoshida, *Wild*'s downfall stemmed from the inability to translate its many ambitious ideas into a functional game framework. He recalled the initial concept of a game world the size of Europe. This grand scale ultimately proved too challenging for the survival game. *Wild* was also planned to feature dynamic weather and seasons, online gameplay, and the ability to play as various wild animals, including wolves, sheep, fish, ants, cats, and birds. Players would control a human character who could utilize smaller animals for reconnaissance and larger ones for combat against other humans. Using shamanistic powers, players could 'possess' animals, shifting perspectives and utilizing their unique abilities and characteristics.
In August 2024, Wild Sheep Studio's creative director, Steven Te Hee, confirmed that *Wild* was no longer in active development.
