SAG-AFTRA Actors' Strike Continues Amidst AI Concerns in Video Games
2025-03-12 23:48:26The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike continues after the union rejected a recent proposal from video game publishers. The core issue remains the use of generative AI in video games, with SAG-AFTRA expressing concerns about potential exploitation and job displacement.
Negotiations, which began over a year and a half ago with major publishers like Activision and EA, have stalled over issues like wage inflation, job security, and the increasing role of AI. SAG-AFTRA leadership, including chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and Interactive Media Negotiating Committee chair Sarah Elmaleh, cited “alarming loopholes” in the publishers’ proposal, which they believe could leave actors vulnerable to AI-driven replacement without proper compensation or consent.
The ongoing dispute also raises questions about the future of voice acting in video games. SAG-AFTRA alleges that publishers are seeking to use past performances, potentially even those outside existing contracts, to train AI models without permission or payment. Furthermore, the union claims producers want the ability to use AI replicas of striking actors during future walkouts, raising concerns about the potential erosion of bargaining power.
SAG-AFTRA has presented a counteroffer addressing these concerns. However, the union has cautioned its members against believing that a deal is imminent, emphasizing the significant distance between the two sides. The union representatives stated that the bargaining group is attempting to create a false sense of progress and sow discord among union members.
While the strike continues, SAG-AFTRA has established interim agreements with the producers of over 160 games, incorporating the protections they seek to implement industry-wide. The union continues to apply pressure through public actions, including pickets outside major game studios, to further their cause.
