Fans of The Legend of Zelda series were excited to hear that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom would receive enhanced versions for the Nintendo Switch 2. However, disappointment arose when it was revealed that these upgraded editions won’t support cloud saves, a feature many gamers rely on for backing up their progress.

During the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct livestream in April, Nintendo showcased the new console and its lineup of games. The upgraded Zelda titles were confirmed to include faster load times, enhanced resolution, smoother frame rates, and HDR support. Additionally, players will have access to the new Zelda Notes feature via the Nintendo Switch App, which includes navigation tools, item sharing, and daily bonuses. Despite these improvements, the lack of cloud save functionality has left fans puzzled.

 Latest Game Information

According to Eurogamer, the store pages for both Zelda games include a disclaimer stating that they do not support the Save Data Cloud backup feature, which is part of the Nintendo Switch Online membership. Interestingly, this warning only appears on the US and EU store pages, while the Japanese store still lists cloud saves as an option. This inconsistency has raised questions among players.

Other Switch 2 Edition games, such as Metroid Prime 4 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land, do not have this limitation, making the exclusion for Zelda titles even more confusing. Players will still be able to transfer their save files from the original Switch, but they won’t be able to create new cloud backups.

Despite the cloud save issue, the Switch 2 Editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom bring several exciting upgrades:

  • Achievements: Tracked via the Nintendo Switch App.
  • Two Save Files: Double the slots for progress.
  • Affordable Upgrade: Owners of the original versions can upgrade for just $10 per game.

Nintendo has also announced new Zelda content for the Switch 2, including Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom. Set to release in Winter 2025, this game will let players control Princess Zelda as she battles Ganondorf.
