Marathon on Switch 2: Current Status and Future Possibilities
2025-04-15 16:36:46Marathon has officially confirmed it won't be arriving on the Nintendo Switch 2 at launch, though developers haven't completely dismissed the idea for the future. When Bungie reignited excitement for Marathon around the same time Nintendo unveiled its next-gen console, fans speculated whether Bungie’s upcoming AAA title could be among the first major third-party releases on the platform.
Fueling these rumors was the speculation that Bungie's Project Gummy Bears might target the Switch. Reports in February 2025 suggested this live-service MOBA was considering the Switch as a launch platform. After the Switch 2 announcement, theories emerged that Bungie might delay Project Gummy Bears for Nintendo’s next-gen console. Naturally, this led to hopes that Marathon, Bungie’s other multiplayer project, could also make its way to the Switch 2.
During a recent gameplay reveal, Joe Ziegler, Marathon's Game Director, discussed how the game differentiates itself from other extraction shooters. The game is scheduled for release in September 2025, with a closed alpha available to U.S. and Canadian players starting April 23rd.
In an interview with Famitsu, Ziegler addressed the Switch 2 rumors directly. He clarified that the team currently has no plans to expand Marathon beyond PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. However, he didn't rule out a potential Switch 2 port in the future. This wouldn't be unprecedented—Sony-owned LEGO Horizon Adventures launched successfully on the Switch in 2024.
Since its 2023 reveal, Marathon has been praised for its unique art style. Its vibrant color palette and avoidance of hyper-realistic violence align well with Nintendo’s family-friendly branding. This makes the absence of a Switch 2 version particularly disappointing for fans.
Bungie previously deemed a Destiny 2 Switch port unrealistic, and while Marathon isn't entirely off the table, a near-future release seems unlikely. If development hasn’t started yet, a port could take one to two years—similar to Rocket League, which arrived on Switch two years after its initial launch. With Marathon set for September 2025, a Switch 2 version might not arrive until late 2026 or 2027, if at all.
