A new indie game called Pocket Wheels is set to revive the spirit of classic 90s collectathon platformers. Developed by Florian Wolf and published by Deck13 Interactive, this unique title blends 3D platforming with racing elements, offering a fresh take on the beloved genre.

Collectathon games, also known as Collect-a-Thons, center around the thrill of collecting items, encouraging players to explore every nook and cranny of the game world.  This core gameplay mechanic has been a staple of platformers for decades, with iconic examples like Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, and the more recent Astro Bot demonstrating its enduring appeal.

In Pocket Wheels, players choose from a variety of miniature vehicles and race through vibrant courses filled with obstacles and, of course, collectibles. While driving is the primary mode of transportation, players will also have access to tools like grappling hooks and wings to navigate the diverse environments.

The game's setting is reminiscent of a child's room filled with imaginative toy setups.  Pocket Wheels promises a wide range of levels, from bustling cities and spooky basements to flooded bathrooms, lava landscapes, and even lunar environments.  Each level presents unique challenges and objectives within a mission-based structure.

A free demo of Pocket Wheels is currently available on Steam, offering a glimpse into the full game experience. The demo features a complete level with six objectives, 12 vehicles to try out, and 100 coins to collect.  It also includes a photo mode, which will be available in the final release.

Scheduled for a 2026 release, Pocket Wheels will be available on PC (via Steam and GOG), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

Developer Florian Wolf describes Pocket Wheels as an interactive interpretation of childhood toy adventures.  Collecting items isn't just for fun; players can use their collected treasures to purchase new vehicles, further incentivizing exploration.  Pocket Wheels aims to join the ranks of compelling modern collectathon platformers while paying tribute to its classic inspirations. Pricing details are yet to be announced.
