Ballistic Moon, Developer of Until Dawn Remake, Effectively Shut Down

2025-03-06 03:53:31

The developer behind the 2024 remake of the popular horror game Until Dawn, Ballistic Moon, has effectively ceased operations. Reports indicate that nearly all staff, excluding the founders and potentially a few others, have been laid off.

Until Dawn's original 2015 release significantly boosted the recognition of Supermassive Games.  Prior to Until Dawn, Supermassive was primarily known for contributions to the Little Big Planet series.  The success of this choice-driven, interactive horror narrative allowed Supermassive to carve out a niche, leading to the creation of The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry (2022).

While the Until Dawn movie is set to offer a fresh perspective on the source material, the remake's developer has faced significant challenges. The remake was Ballistic Moon's debut project, and if reports hold true, it will likely be its last.

Sony, the parent company, initially appeared to have ambitious plans for Ballistic Moon. However, according to sources cited by Insider Gaming, almost the entire staff across development, PR, and marketing has been let go.  The report suggests the studio's owners sought funding for new projects, but the shutdown will likely halt support for the Until Dawn remake, which has faced criticism for persistent bugs.  Ballistic Moon's website, which still lists the remake as 'coming soon' despite its October launch, remains outdated and offers no official statement.

The layoffs were not a single event.  An initial round occurred a month prior to the remake's release in September 2024, impacting at least a dozen developers. Subsequent reports indicate approximately 20 more employees were laid off in December.  While sources generally described positive experiences working at Ballistic Moon, some complaints about unpaid overtime emerged.

Ballistic Moon's reported closure casts doubt on earlier hints of an Until Dawn sequel. Actor Peter Stormare, who portrays Dr. Hill in both the games and the upcoming April movie adaptation, previously shared a fan theory regarding a sequel on Instagram. If a sequel does materialize, development would likely return to Supermassive Games or be entrusted to a new studio.

Furthermore, the remake did not achieve the same level of acclaim as the original. OpenCritic currently rates the remake as 'Fair' with a Top Critic Average of 69, ten points lower than the original's 'Strong' rating of 79.
