Apex Legends French Voice Actors Unite Against EA's Alleged AI Voice Training Agreement
2025-02-28 16:09:55Recent reports indicate a growing conflict between Electronic Arts (EA) and the French voice actors behind the popular battle royale game, *Apex Legends*. Pascale Chemin, the voice of the character Wraith, took to Instagram to reveal that she and 31 of her colleagues received a mandatory agreement from EA, a prerequisite for continued collaboration.
While Chemin's post didn't explicitly name EA or *Apex Legends*, her tagged colleagues and mention of voicing a character for "almost six years" aligns with the game's release timeline. Chemin has voiced Wraith since the game's launch in 2019.
According to translations of her post, Chemin stated, "The company sent me (and 31 other voice actors on the team) an email containing confidentiality and agreements coming directly from the publisher. I needed to accept these clauses in order to start work. Upon reading these clauses I immediately knew, and a legal expert specialized in the audiovisual sector confirmed: these clauses were unacceptable."
"I am now being forced to give up a role I've been voicing for nearly six years. I cannot possibly force other actors to do so as well, but one thing is certain: if we all refuse, it could have an impact. Otherwise, it will all be in vain."
Chemin’s colleagues appear to be standing in solidarity. She continued in her post, "The other 31 voice actors did not hesitate to refuse to sign this agreement. We wrote a collective refusal letter that we sent to the publisher and are awaiting a response. If we don't unite now to formally add clauses protecting our voices to our contracts – not just ours, but those of every video game dubbing studio – we will never get one (a fair agreement) and we are headed for disaster."
This suggests that EA is requiring these French voice actors to allow their voices to be used to train AI. "We are not just asking for work," Chemin’s post implies. "We are being asked to give our expertise to train the generative AI that will replace us tomorrow. We are being asked to endorse something we deeply resent. We are being asked to shoot ourselves in the foot. We are being asked to support AI."
In a follow-up post on X (formerly Twitter), Chemin added, "Video game publishers want to force a breakthrough (against opposition to AI). But accepting means, simply put: giving up our rights, and accepting being replaced by machines."
As of now, EA has not publicly addressed these reports or responded to media requests for comment.
