FragPunk's Console Release Delayed, Compensation Announced
2025-03-05 22:14:50The highly anticipated console release of 5v5 hero shooter, FragPunk, has been unexpectedly delayed. Publisher NetEase announced the postponement, citing technical challenges encountered during the console compliance testing process. This delay affects both PlayStation and Xbox versions of the game, while the PC release remains on track for March 6th.
FragPunk aims to carve its niche in a competitive market dominated by established titles like Overwatch 2 and Marvel Rivals. Its unique selling point lies in its distinctive visual style and innovative gameplay mechanics, featuring over 70 collectible cards that introduce game-altering effects. These cards can dramatically shift the tide of battle, from giving opponents oversized heads to imbuing bullets with elemental properties.
FragPunk's Creative Director, Xin Chang of Bad Guitar Studio, recently discussed the game's ambition to compete in the hero shooter genre in an interview with Game Rant. This announcement comes just days after the positive reception of FragPunk's closed beta tests.
NetEase explained that the decision to delay, rather than release a subpar product, was made after encountering unexpected technical hurdles during console optimization and adaptation. The company has apologized for the inconvenience and outlined compensation plans for affected players.
Pre-orders for the Xbox and PlayStation versions will be automatically refunded. Upon the console launch, pre-order bonuses will be offered again for a limited time. Additionally, players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will receive all rewards earned through player engagement from the start of FragPunk Season 1 until the console version's eventual release. These rewards include cosmetics, in-game currency, and XP. Furthermore, those who pre-ordered on console will receive $10 worth of in-game currency upon the console edition's launch.
While a new release date is yet to be announced, FragPunk demonstrates strong potential for success, even in a crowded market. NetEase has prior experience in this genre with Marvel Rivals, and developer Bad Guitar Studio has actively incorporated player feedback from the beta tests. If the team can swiftly address technical issues and maintain a steady stream of new content, FragPunk has a strong chance of establishing a loyal player base.
FragPunk is a fast-paced 5v5 hero shooter where collectible cards called Shard Cards dynamically alter the rules of each round. Players choose their hero, weapons, and a selection of Shard Cards to create unique and unpredictable gameplay experiences.
With over 70 Shard Cards available, no two rounds of FragPunk are ever the same. These cards can amplify jump height, swap attacker and defender roles, imbue bullets with fire or chain lightning, and even resurrect fallen teammates.
Rounds are designed for quick, intense action, lasting approximately 2.5 minutes. The short time-to-kill demands precise aiming and rapid reflexes. Players can choose from 10 diverse heroes, customize their weapon loadouts, and select their Shard Cards before jumping into the fray.
FragPunk offers high replayability through a combination of hero diversity, weapon customization, and Shard Card combinations. 10 unique heroes, 15 weapons (some with special abilities like increasing fire rate or burst fire), and a vast array of Shard Cards allow players to develop their own distinct playstyles.
