Far Cry 7 Development Update: Project Maverick Reboot and Team Restructuring

Recent leaks reveal significant changes in the development of Ubisoft's upcoming Far Cry extraction-shooter, previously known as Project Maverick.  The project has reportedly been rebooted, with a large portion of the team being reassigned to Project Blackbird, the core development team for Far Cry 7.

While some team members are simply shifting their focus to Far Cry 7, the restructuring suggests Ubisoft is streamlining its development process.  This comes after recent updates to Far Cry 5 and 6, which unlocked Steam achievements and ensured achievement progress carried over from Ubisoft Connect, a move likely intended to keep fans engaged while waiting for the next installments.

Insider Gaming reports that the reboot decision for Project Maverick became increasingly necessary. The final straw appears to be the reassignment of the core tech team, known as Talisker, to Project Blackbird.

Initially conceived as part of Far Cry 7, Project Maverick was intended to offer a survival experience in the Alaskan wilderness, pitting players against both AI and human opponents.  The ambitious multiplayer component led to it becoming a standalone project in 2023, with a dedicated team.  However, an internal review at Ubisoft triggered the project's reset.

Teams at Ubisoft Montreal and Sherbrooke are now revamping Project Maverick in its prototyping phase.  Around 12 developers from Ubisoft Berlin who were assisting with Maverick have moved to Blackbird, with another group of similar size transitioning to an unrelated project.  Insider Gaming estimates that approximately 50 developers have been left without active projects and are awaiting reassignment.  This aligns with Ubisoft’s broader efforts to restructure and optimize its development process.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the extraction shooter's future, developers working on Far Cry 7 remain optimistic about a 2026 release.
