GTA 5 Enhanced PC Launch: Missing Text Chat Sparks Player Backlash

2025-03-05 07:26:37

The enhanced edition of Grand Theft Auto 5, boasting upgrades previously exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, arrived on PC on March 4th.  These enhancements include visual and audio improvements, along with PC-specific features like Nvidia DLSS support and enhanced ray tracing. Players could also migrate their existing progress from the original GTA 5, now labeled 'GTA 5 Legacy' on Steam.

However, the launch has been far from smooth. The removal of the in-game text chat feature has ignited significant backlash within the PC player base.  Many have voiced their disappointment in Steam reviews, arguing that this omission, along with performance issues and migration complications, prevents the Enhanced edition from being the definitive version they anticipated.

The missing text chat has been a major point of contention.  Some initially believed it to be a bug, but according to player-reported support tickets on GTA Forums, Rockstar Games has stated it will not be supported at launch.  The developer suggests using Steam chat or the in-game SMS feature as alternatives, a solution many players find unsatisfactory.

On launch day, over 1,600 negative reviews flooded Steam, resulting in a 'Mixed' rating, mirroring the reception of other PC releases like Monster Hunter Wilds.  This negative feedback centers around the absent text chat and various technical problems.

While the future of text chat remains uncertain, Rockstar Games encourages players to submit feedback through the official GTA Online website. Despite the controversy, a significant portion of players are enjoying the Enhanced edition, indicated by the near 50/50 split between positive and negative reviews. With GTA 6 on the horizon for fall 2025, now might be an opportune time to revisit the world of GTA 5.
