Defiance MMO Resurrected: PC Relaunch and Future Possibilities
2025-04-21 22:52:06The free-to-play MMO looter shooter Defiance has risen from the ashes, though currently only available on PC. Originally developed by Trion Worlds (now defunct), this ambitious project launched in April 2013 as a companion to the Syfy television series of the same name.
Initially released as a premium title for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, Defiance transitioned to free-to-play just 14 months later. Its 2018 reboot, Defiance 2050, failed to capture audiences and became one of the lowest-rated free-to-play games of its era. After Gamigo acquired Trion Worlds, both versions were discontinued in April 2021.
In March 2025, publisher Fawkes Games announced they had secured the rights to Defiance with immediate plans for relaunch. This promise materialized on April 18 when the PC version went live. Currently, the game is only available through Fawkes' official website, with no confirmation about potential Steam or other platform releases.
The revived version represents the complete 2013 experience with all its accumulated content updates. Fawkes Games emphasizes this isn't just a game restoration but an attempt to rebuild the entire online community. Their statement reveals plans to monitor player response closely, with potential console versions and Defiance 2050 revival contingent on this PC version's success.
Fawkes acknowledges the relaunch as an ongoing project, with technical issues being addressed. Players may experience disconnections during instance transitions (Expeditions, PvP, tutorial) and occasional login difficulties. Frequent server restarts continue as the team implements emergency fixes.
Previous Defiance accounts won't transfer to this new iteration. All players must create fresh accounts and begin anew. While Fawkes promises long-term support, they currently maintain only essential staffing until gauging player interest levels.
