D&D Artificer Revamped: New Subclass and Dragonmark Feats in Eberron: Forge of the Artificer
2025-03-05 06:28:34Dungeons & Dragons has unveiled a second Unearthed Arcana playtest, further refining the Artificer class and introducing the innovative Cartographer subclass. These revisions, along with new Dragonmark feats, will be officially released in Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, launching August 19th.
The Artificer, originally absent from the 2014 Player's Handbook, received its first wave of updates in a December 2024 Unearthed Arcana. This playtest introduced changes to core abilities like Replicate Magic Item and Soul of Artifice, new features like Magic Item Tinker, and various subclass enhancements.
This second playtest incorporates player feedback and features additional Artificer adjustments. Tinker's Magic replaces Magical Tinkering, Replicate Magic Item tables have been revised, and Magic Item Tinker now allows spell slots to recharge items. The Soul of Artifice capstone allows greater hit point recovery when using magic items to avoid death, and Flash of Genius now refunds uses on unsuccessful rolls.
The most exciting addition is the Cartographer, a highly mobile Artificer subclass. Cartographers provide allies with maps granting unique utility, including locating and marking allies and enemies, battlefield teleportation, rescuing downed characters, and even unbreakable concentration.
Beyond the Artificer changes, the Unearthed Arcana includes over two dozen new feats inspired by Eberron's Dragonmarks. These feats are primarily divided into base Marks and enhanced Greater Marks. An Aberrant Dragonmark feat, a Potent Dragonmark feat, and the Boon of Siberys, a new Epic Boon for level 19 characters, are also included.
These additions, subject to further refinement based on player feedback, are slated for inclusion in Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, releasing August 19th. The Unearthed Arcana survey is open until March 11th, allowing players to share their thoughts with Wizards of the Coast.
