The upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A is taking a different approach to its battle system, notably omitting Pokemon abilities, much like its predecessor, Pokemon Legends: Arceus.  While the core monster-catching gameplay remains, several key features are being reimagined.

Traditionally, Pokemon abilities have added a layer of strategic depth, providing unique bonuses and effects in battle. From stat boosts and damage mitigation to utility effects like 'Pick Up' and 'Flame Body,' abilities have become a defining characteristic of each Pokemon.  Even the rare 'hidden abilities' have played a crucial role in competitive battling. However, these will be absent in the upcoming Z-A.

Analysis of the extended Pokemon Legends: Z-A trailer confirms the absence of abilities.  Listings for the starter Pokemon Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile lack any mention of their abilities, mirroring the system in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which replaced abilities with 'Strong' and 'Agile' style attacks.

This shift aligns with the game's drastically revamped real-time combat system.  For the first time in a mainline Pokemon game, players and their Pokemon will have free movement on the battlefield, dodging attacks and strategically positioning themselves. This dynamic combat system promises a fresh and engaging experience.

Adding to the excitement, Mega Evolution is making a return. Absent from the main series since Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Mega Evolutions will be reintroduced in Z-A. Fan-favorite Mega Evolutions like Mega Gardevoir and Mega Absol are confirmed to be returning, adding another layer of depth to the battles.

The recent Pokemon Presents livestream offered a glimpse into the game's world, showcasing the futuristic Lumiose City from Pokemon X and Y, now undergoing a high-tech restoration. The city will feature numerous 'Wild Zone' Pokemon habitats, seamlessly integrating wilderness areas within the urban environment.  The trailer also teased the return of the enigmatic character AZ from X and Y.
