Overwatch 2's Evolving Perk System: Major Updates Planned Through Season 18

Overwatch 2 is committed to keeping its recently introduced Perk system dynamic and engaging.  Significant changes are planned throughout the upcoming seasons, including buffs, nerfs, the introduction of new Perks, and a major system refresh in Season 18.

Introduced in Season 15, Perks offer players the ability to customize their heroes with unique upgrades.  Each hero can select from two minor Perks at level two and two major Perks at level three. These enhancements range from stat boosts and passive abilities to entirely new or reworked skills.

Recent developer discussions revealed exciting plans for the future of Perks.  A mid-Season 15 update will address balance concerns, including buffs to Roadhog's Hog Toss and Junker Queen's Re-Boots, and nerfs to Bastion's potent Self-Repair Perk. Season 16 will introduce entirely new Perks, rotating out some less popular options.

Season 18 promises a major overhaul of the Perk system. Every hero will receive at least one new Perk, with an estimated 25-50% replacement of existing Perks.  This refresh will primarily target Perks with middling popularity, aiming to optimize player choice and strategic depth.  The developers also plan to evaluate the overall Perk system in Season 18, potentially adjusting catch-up mechanics, progression gains, or even starting level choices.

The developers have noted a 25% decrease in counter-swapping since the introduction of Perks.  While there are currently no plans to allow players to change Perks mid-match, they are considering safeguards to prevent accidental selections. The overall goal is to utilize Perks to maintain character kits that are fluid, customizable, and continually evolving while preserving the impact of hero selection.

The mid-Season 15 patch is anticipated to arrive in mid to late March, with Season 16 following on April 22nd. This places Season 18, along with the Perk refresh and the second new hero of 2025, around late August.  With these Perk updates, the new Stadium mode, and other revealed content, 2025 is shaping up to be a significant year for Overwatch 2.
