The resounding success of Marvel Snap has brought renewed scrutiny to Overwatch 2's position in the gaming landscape.  However, in a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller addressed the competition head-on, praising Marvel Snap while revealing that the greatest pressure for Blizzard comes from within.

Keller stated, "We're obviously in a new competitive landscape. I don't think we've ever really experienced this before with Overwatch, where there's another game that is so similar to the game that we make.  It's actually kind of exciting for a couple of reasons."

He elaborated on this excitement, noting that seeing Marvel Snap take familiar ideas in "different directions" is "really cool."  However, the competitor's success also "forces our team – it’s no longer being careful."

Keller further emphasized the internal drive within the Overwatch team: "A lot of the pressure the Overwatch team feels is internal pressure. We're always asking ourselves, 'How do we make the best game possible?'  We’ve felt that pressure for a while now."

Despite the competitive landscape, Keller clarified that major changes coming in Seasons 15 and 16 were already in development long before Marvel Snap's rise.  The team has been focused on combating the potential monotony that can arise from years of playing Overwatch and other shooters.  "We wanted to inject some newness into the game, but it's not just for variety's sake; we want to add depth," Keller explained.

He continued, "So, with skills, we have choices, and we hope that's adding depth to how any individual hero can be played. We hope it's adding strategy to matches, because now you can pick something that’s going to augment what your hero can do, or you could use it to counter someone on the opposite team."
