Windows 11 24H2 Installation Issue: Missing Security Updates for Some Users

2025-02-10 04:43:49

Microsoft recently identified an issue impacting some Windows 11 users running the 24H2 update.  Those who installed the update using bootable media, such as a USB drive or disc, containing the October or November 2024 security updates, may not be receiving subsequent security updates.

This issue specifically affects users who installed 24H2 using the Media Creation Tool in conjunction with older installation media. Users who utilized installation media with the December 2024 security updates or later are not affected.

Fortunately, Microsoft has provided a straightforward solution. Affected users can resolve the problem by reinstalling Windows 11 24H2 using installation media that incorporates the December 2024 security updates or any later updates.  During reinstallation, users have the option to preserve their existing files or perform a clean installation.

This incident isn't the first time Windows 11 updates have presented challenges. Previous updates have been reported to negatively impact gaming performance.  However, this particular issue does not affect users who update their systems through the standard Windows Update process via the Settings app or the Microsoft Update Catalog website.  Even users who downloaded the problematic October or November 2024 patches through these conventional channels are not affected.

Windows 11, now over three years old, continues to evolve.  Devices like the Meta Quest 3 VR headset have affirmed compatibility with the latest OS.  It remains to be seen what new features and improvements 2025 will bring for Windows 11 users.
