The upcoming Ark: Aquatica DLC, developed by Snail Games, has become embroiled in controversy following the release of its trailer.  Fans suspect that the footage is AI-generated, leading to a wave of criticism and disappointment.

The announcement that Snail Games, rather than the usual Studio Wildcard, would be developing Aquatica initially surprised fans.  While the news was coupled with updates on Ark: Lost Colony and reassurances that Wildcard would continue to handle Ark: Survival Ascended and Ark 2, the subsequent trailer release ignited a firestorm of backlash.

The Aquatica trailer has drawn heavy criticism, with fans pointing to the seemingly AI-generated visuals.  This outcry echoes similar concerns raised regarding the use of AI in other recent game releases.  While the DLC promises exciting new creatures and mechanics, the perceived reliance on AI-generated footage has significantly dampened the enthusiasm surrounding the launch.

The trailer's narration describes a new world awaiting players after 10 years of journeying in the Ark universe.  This narration is juxtaposed with footage of a character deep diving without any gear, showcasing underwater reefs, flora, and a swimming dinosaur.  Quick cuts feature the diver firing a crossbow and retrieving a crystal, including a particularly jarring shot of an octopus seemingly floating out of the water.

Fans' frustrations stem from several factors, but the primary concern is the suspected use of high-fidelity generative AI visuals in place of actual gameplay.  Critics have noted the disproportionate amount of suspected AI footage compared to in-game content, labeling the video as tone-deaf and out of touch with the growing anti-AI sentiment within the gaming community. Some fans have even called for Snail Games to sell the Ark franchise to other developers.  In response to the backlash, Snail Games has unlisted the video, but their silence on the matter has only deepened the concerns of the community.
