Phasmophobia's New Voice Recognition Update Intensifies Ghost Hunting on Consoles

The ghost hunting survival game, Phasmophobia, has received a significant update, introducing voice recognition for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S players. This exciting addition allows console players to communicate directly with ghosts, adding a new layer of immersion to the already chilling gameplay.

Since its early access release in 2020, Phasmophobia has captivated players with its creepy atmosphere and team-based paranormal investigations. Teams of up to four players explore haunted locations, using various tools to identify the type of spirit present. The game quickly gained popularity on Twitch, with viewers tuning in to witness the thrilling and often terrifying encounters.

Developer Kinetic Games recently released a roadmap outlining future content updates for 2025 and beyond. Following the game's port to consoles in late 2024, this voice recognition update brings the console versions in line with the PC experience.

Utilizing VOSK voice recognition software, players can now speak directly to ghosts through the Spirit Box, asking questions and even calling out the ghost's name to provoke increased paranormal activity.  This voice interaction also extends to Curse Possessions, further integrating the feature into core gameplay mechanics.

Setting up voice recognition varies slightly between consoles. PS5 players can utilize the DualSense controller's built-in microphone or the PlayStation VR2's microphone. Xbox Series X/S players will require a headset.  Regardless of platform, enabling the feature requires switching the 'Voice Recognition Mode' to 'Voice' in the game's options menu.  Notably, the Xbox version will automatically revert to text mode if the microphone disconnects mid-game.

Currently, the voice recognition feature supports English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Japanese, with plans to expand language support in future updates.

Beyond voice recognition, the patch addresses several bugs, including a fix for an issue preventing Xbox Series X/S players from earning achievements in offline solo mode.
