Marvel Rivals recently sparked controversy within its community by revealing the “mystery costume” offered through its Regal Cinemas promotion tied to Captain America: Brave New World will be an existing skin.  The news comes as players eagerly anticipate the Season 1: Eternal Night Falls update, scheduled for February 21st, which promises a new map and the addition of Human Torch and The Thing.

The promotion, announced by NetEase Games, offers a nameplate, spray, and the aforementioned costume to fans who see Captain America: Brave New World during its opening weekend at participating Regal Cinemas. Many had hoped for a unique MCU Red Hulk skin, given his prominence in the film.

Marvel Rivals players voiced their frustration on social media after a tweet from Marvel Rivals clarified that the Regal Cinemas promotion costume wouldn’t be new. The announcement also stated that players already owning the skin would receive no alternative reward. This sparked widespread criticism, with many arguing the promotion should have disclosed the skin’s identity beforehand.  Some even labeled the promotion “shady” due to the ambiguous initial wording.

With the Red Hulk skin debunked, speculation shifted towards a Captain America skin.  While the Vanguard recently received an MCU Avengers: Infinity War inspired outfit, many doubted it would be offered free so soon. Some suggested Captain America's Galactic Talon outfit, only available during Season 0, would be a fitting choice.  Regardless of the specific skin, a significant portion of the community wants the developer to reveal the mystery reward.

This isn’t the first recent controversy for NetEase Games.  The planned rank reset for the Chapter 1: Eternal Night Falls mid-season update was met with immediate backlash. Players argued the reset would discourage continued play. Marvel Rivals quickly reversed the decision, thanking players for their feedback. It remains to be seen how NetEase Games will address the current criticism surrounding the Regal Cinemas promotion, but many hope for a swift clarification of the mystery skin’s identity.
