World of Warcraft's Plunderstorm Bids Farewell, Undermined Rises

After a brief resurgence, World of Warcraft's Plunderstorm battle royale mode is preparing for its second departure. Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that Plunderstorm will conclude on February 25th, coinciding with the launch of Patch 11.1 and the introduction of the “Undermined” content update for the ongoing “The War Within” expansion.

Players have just two weeks remaining to amass pirate-themed rewards, including mounts, battle pets, and transmogrification sets.  A unique reward system allows players who earn 5,000 Plunder to receive a Storm-Singed Plunder Chest via in-game mail. This chest contains tokens redeemable for one-time loot chests, potentially containing class-specific armor with an item level of 610.  It's recommended to redeem these tokens promptly, as the fate of the chests post-Patch 11.1 is uncertain.

Patch 11.1 will take players to the Undermine, the bustling subterranean city of the goblins. Here, they'll confront a coup orchestrated by Jastor Gallywix, the deposed leader of the Bilgewater Cartel and an ally of Xal'atath, the primary antagonist of The War Within. Gallywix awaits players as the final boss of the new raid, “The Liberation of Undermine.”

Following the Undermined update, World of Warcraft players can anticipate the arrival of “The War Within” Season 2 on March 4th.  This new season will introduce a refreshed Mythic+ dungeon rotation, the Undermine raid, and impactful class balance changes.

The initial iteration of Plunderstorm debuted in Dragonflight Patch 10.2.6 and enjoyed a successful run before returning in January 2025.  Set in the familiar battleground of Arathi Basin, Plunderstorm offers a 60-player PvP battle royale experience.  Players must strategically gather Plunder and eliminate opponents to secure victory.  Based on player feedback, Blizzard implemented several enhancements for the second season, including reworked abilities and items, and a streamlined Plunderstore for cosmetic reward acquisition. Players were also able to queue for Plunderstorm while engaging with “The War Within” content.

While the future of Plunderstorm remains unclear, the community has expressed a strong desire for its return, perhaps with the addition of new maps.  Only time will tell if and when this popular battle royale mode will grace Azeroth once more.
