The city-building game Overthrown, currently in early access, has received its first major content update, aptly titled The Livestock Update. Launched on December 5, 2024, Overthrown is available on PC via Steam and Xbox Series X/S through Xbox Game Preview.

Developed by Brimstone and published by Maximum Entertainment, Overthrown casts players as Runa, a magically empowered monarch tasked with building and protecting their kingdom.  Gather resources, construct buildings, defend against mutant threats, and collaborate with up to six players in online co-op.

The Livestock Update, which arrived on PC on January 30, 2025, and Xbox on January 31, 2025, introduces the game's first farmable livestock: Woolies. These sheep-like creatures come in three variations: normal, fluffy, and a surprisingly “gigantic evil mutated form.” Players can even obtain wool by giving the Woolies a good punch.

Combat in Overthrown also receives a significant boost with the addition of fire bombs, mortars, and power kegs. Now, players can ignite buildings during combat, adding a new layer of strategic destruction to the gameplay. This fiery addition is available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers as well.

Nine new structures, including the Mortar Tower, Washhouse, and Woolie Barn, join the existing roster of buildings.  An expanded research tree and new worker types like the Cannoneer, Gong Farmer, and Weaver further enhance the gameplay experience.  A much-needed UX improvement comes in the form of tooltips, providing valuable information about in-game items.

Brimstone has outlined future updates planned for Overthrown, including difficulty options, map icons, happiness-based citizen spawn rates, and dynamic outlaw settlements and raids.  Leveraging the positive early access reception on Steam, the developers aim to incorporate player feedback for a successful full launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The Livestock Update also includes a significant number of changes and fixes based on player feedback.  The update addresses issues with NPC behavior, resource management, and overall game balance. Performance optimizations have also been implemented to improve loading times and gameplay smoothness. New graphics options and automatic recommended settings further enhance the player experience.
