Hideki Kamiya's Connected Universe: From Okami to Viewtiful Joe and Beyond
2025-01-30 20:45:38Hideki Kamiya, the renowned game director behind titles such as Okami, Bayonetta, and Devil May Cry, recently confirmed a fascinating detail: all the games he's directed exist within the same universe. Despite the diverse art styles present in Kamiya's portfolio, ranging from Okami's distinctive visuals to the sleek aesthetics of Bayonetta, the action-adventure genre remains a common thread. His impressive repertoire also includes directing Resident Evil 2, Viewtiful Joe, and The Wonderful 101, and contributing as creative director on Sol Cresta.
Kamiya's career began at Capcom, where he worked with their subsidiary Clover Studio between 2004 and 2006. He later departed Capcom to co-found PlatinumGames with other former Capcom staff in 2006, serving as vice president from 2017 to 2023. Citing creative differences, Kamiya explained his decision to leave PlatinumGames and pursue his own vision. This led to the formation of his independent studio, Clovers Inc., in 2024, with the aim of developing the much-anticipated Okami sequel.
In a video posted to his YouTube channel, launched in 2023 to keep fans updated post-PlatinumGames, Kamiya addressed fan questions about his past and future projects. Responding to a query about Bayonetta and Devil May Cry's shared universe hinted at through in-game Easter eggs, Kamiya casually declared, "All the games I create exist in the same single universe: the Kamiya-verse." He specifically confirmed Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and The Wonderful 101 as part of this interconnected world, encouraging fans to "let their imaginations run wild."
Fans on YouTube responded positively to this revelation, noting the thematic connections and recurring motifs of good versus evil across his games, creating a sense of familiarity and interconnected narrative. Separately, Kamiya recently addressed the ongoing issue of industry leaks, criticizing Nintendo Switch 2 leakers and expressing his frustration with those involved.
The announcement of an Okami sequel at The Game Awards 2024 was a welcome surprise. With Kamiya at the helm, alongside Capcom and a revived Clover Studio, the sequel promises to retain the original's cel-shaded art style and the beloved Celestial Brush mechanic. While a release date is yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2, leveraging the console’s enhanced capabilities.
