Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Co-op Bug Makes Some Levels Unplayable
2025-01-29 10:19:09The recently released Donkey Kong Country Returns HD for Nintendo Switch has encountered a significant co-op bug that impacts gameplay. While solo play remains unaffected, this issue renders certain levels in co-op mode virtually unplayable.
The HD remaster of the beloved Wii title boasts enhanced graphics and includes additional content from the 3DS version. However, this new bug overshadows the improvements and adds to existing fan concerns regarding the game's pricing and lack of truly new content.
Nintendo appears committed to its recent redesign of Donkey Kong, as seen in footage for the upcoming Mario Kart game on the Switch 2. This coincides with the discovery of a frustrating co-op issue in Donkey Kong Country Returns HD.
The issue, highlighted by YouTube channel Kong Kompendium, prevents multiple players from using the same enemy for consecutive bounces. While the original Wii version allowed for a brief window for both players to bounce, this functionality is absent in the HD remaster. This limitation, originating in the 3DS version, is attributed to technical constraints of the 3DS hardware, but its persistence in the Switch port remains perplexing.
This bug significantly hinders co-op progression in levels that require successive bounces off enemies. Kong Kompendium demonstrates this issue in the 'Platform Panic' level, where one player is repeatedly forced to fall to their death due to the inability to share bounce opportunities with their partner.
Fans have expressed frustration with Forever Entertainment, the developer of the HD port, for not addressing this issue carried over from the 3DS version. Many hope for a patch to rectify the bug. Kong Kompendium has contacted both Nintendo and Forever Entertainment regarding the problem, but an official response is still pending.
