Red Dead Redemption 2 has galloped to a new all-time peak player count on Steam, exceeding 86,000 concurrent users, thanks to a substantial discount offered during a promotional sale on the platform.

This milestone for the critically acclaimed Western epic arrives nearly six years after its PC debut in 2019, following its initial release on consoles a year earlier.

Considered one of Rockstar Games' most impactful titles, Red Dead Redemption 2 has garnered numerous awards and widespread acclaim.  Beyond critical success, the game has also enjoyed significant commercial triumph, selling millions of copies worldwide.  Impressively, the game continues to maintain its popularity, with strong sales reported even in late 2024. The recent price drop on Steam has undoubtedly fueled the record-breaking surge in its player base.

According to SteamDB statistics, 86,717 Steam users played Red Dead Redemption 2 simultaneously on January 26, 2025, propelling the game to its highest concurrent player count to date. This achievement coincides with the action-adventure title reaching its lowest-ever price on Valve's platform. Starting January 23, Red Dead Redemption 2 has been available for $14.99, a remarkable 75% discount. This special offer is part of an ongoing Steam sale featuring various Rockstar-published games and will remain valid until February 6, 2025, at 10 AM PT. Notably, the game also experienced a significant boost when its Xbox version received a price reduction during Black Friday 2024.

This isn't the first instance where a Steam price drop has led to a new player count peak for Red Dead Redemption 2.  Its previous record of 77,655 concurrent players was set on November 26, 2023, coinciding with a 67% discount, its previous lowest price on the platform. This clearly demonstrates how Steam sales can attract a significant influx of new players, even to older titles.  Much like Red Dead Redemption 2, the 2013 title Arma 3 saw a resurgence during a Steam sale in July 2024.

While Rockstar Games remains focused on the development of their next flagship title, GTA 6, their existing catalog continues to perform impressively.  Both Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5 reported robust sales figures in December 2024. With these strong commercial results and the highly anticipated release of GTA 6 later this year, 2025 appears to be a promising year for the American publisher.
