Assassin's Creed Shadows Censored in Japan Due to Graphic Violence

Ubisoft's upcoming title, Assassin's Creed Shadows, has hit a snag in Japan due to its graphic content. The company recently announced it is censoring certain elements of the game to comply with CERO, Japan's game rating organization.

Despite already carrying a CERO Z rating (equivalent to an 18+ rating), CERO requested further adjustments to tone down the violence, echoing similar situations faced by Capcom with Resident Evil Village.

Ubisoft has detailed a comprehensive list of accessibility features for Assassin's Creed Shadows, offering players numerous options to customize their gameplay experience.

The censorship primarily focuses on dismemberment. While other versions of the game allow players to toggle this feature, the Japanese release will have it disabled entirely.  Furthermore, the depiction of severed limbs and body parts has been altered, and certain Japanese dialogue lines have been modified.

This incident isn't CERO's first foray into controversy regarding in-game dismemberment.  In 2024, EA Japan's General Manager, Shaun Noguchi, publicly questioned CERO's seemingly inconsistent standards. Stellar Blade, featuring similar violent content to Dead Space, received a lower rating, while Dead Space was effectively refused a rating due to its graphic depictions of dismemberment.
