Spider-Man Swings into Magic: The Gathering with New Universes Beyond Set
2025-03-02 00:28:13Magic: The Gathering players are getting their first glimpse at the exciting new Spider-Man Universes Beyond set, launching later this year. This crossover brings beloved Marvel characters into the popular trading card game, adding a fresh layer of strategy and gameplay.
This isn't Magic: The Gathering's first foray into crossover sets. Previous collaborations have included franchises like Fallout, Assassin's Creed, and Doctor Who. However, 2025 marks a significant shift in how these Universes Beyond sets are integrated. For the first time, these cards will be Standard-legal, beginning with the highly anticipated Final Fantasy expansion this summer.
Previously, crossover cards were confined to formats like Modern and Commander. This change to Standard legality opens up exciting new deck-building possibilities and competitive gameplay options.
As revealed by IGN, Wizards of the Coast has unveiled a selection of cards from the Spider-Man set, including four Legendary Creatures: Spider-Man, Venom, Doc Ock, and Green Goblin. Each character boasts unique abilities and playstyles. Spider-Man utilizes stun counters to draw cards, Doc Ock transforms Artifacts into Creatures, and Green Goblin gains power through +1/+1 counters and Treasure Tokens when discarding cards.
The reveal also showcases stunning borderless artwork for each card, which combine to create a dynamic scene of Spider-Man facing off against his iconic foes.
In addition to the legendary characters, two other impactful cards were revealed. "Grasping Tentacles," a Doc Ock-themed Sorcery, forces an opponent to mill eight cards and then allows the player to put an Artifact from the opponent's graveyard onto their own battlefield. "Pumpkin Bombs" allows players to trigger Green Goblin's discard ability, dealing damage to an opponent and offering a card draw advantage.
The Spider-Man Universes Beyond expansion is set to release on September 26th.
This collaboration isn't the first time Magic: The Gathering has teamed up with Marvel. A Marvel-themed Secret Lair drop in late 2024 featured iconic heroes like Captain America, Storm, and Black Panther. Following the Spider-Man set, the next Universes Beyond release will feature characters from Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender, demonstrating the continued commitment to bringing diverse and exciting worlds into the Magic: The Gathering universe.
