Echo of Spells: A Triple Threat Roguelike with Pixel Polish
2025-01-24 14:18:08A good roguelike can be a relaxing escape during a busy day, a comforting companion for a restless worker late at night, or simply… *chef's kiss*. The world needs more roguelikes, and Echo of Spells answers the call.
As the gaming industry evolves, we're seeing high-quality AAA titles like Black Myth: Wukong alongside innovative indie gems. Echo of Spells falls firmly into the latter category, offering a compelling and replayable experience.
What is Echo of Spells?
Echo of Spells is a single-player, pixel art roguelike game featuring card-building combat within its procedurally generated levels. Developed by Fossil Circuit, a small studio of fewer than 20 people based in Chengdu, China, and built using the Unity engine, the game showcased impressive potential in its demo, boasting an average playtime of nearly 8 hours. Despite its indie status, Echo of Spells feels polished and complete, with intuitive UI and helpful guidance – a rarity in the indie game landscape.
What's new since the demo?
The demo for Echo of Spells featured only one mode, now called "Construction Mode", with approximately 50% of its final content. The full release offers two initial modes: "Casual Mode" and "Construction Mode," with a locked "Abyss Mode" planned for future release.
Gameplay Modes
Casual Mode: This survival-style mode allows for free movement using a keyboard or controller (with full controller support). Within a confined arena, players defeat enemies to level up and choose spells to enhance their survivability. The unique twist? Players can freely configure the order of their spells, creating powerful "spell combos." Every spell added or removed is a strategic decision, requiring careful consideration and experimentation.
Construction Mode: This is the mode featured in the demo, offering 4 factions and 10 builds to explore. Players ascend through progressively challenging levels, refining their deck and strategy to defeat bosses. Progression in this mode grants experience, unlocking talent and skill points to further enhance builds and make later runs more manageable.
Abyss Mode: Details are scarce, but the description suggests turn-based combat with unique objectives per turn. More information will be available after release.
Why Play Echo of Spells?
• A stable demo translates to a stable launch version, evidenced by the impressive average demo playtime. Nobody wants to pay for a beta test these days.
• The core gameplay loop is solid, offering fast-paced combat that's easy to learn but difficult to master. There’s plenty of content to explore and discover.
• Three game modes for the price of one – it feels like getting two bonus outfits with a single purchase. The price point, especially with the launch discount, offers excellent value.
• The pixel art style is beautifully executed, presenting a visually appealing and engaging world.
