SteamDB Adds Filter for Games Using Generative AI
2025-02-26 08:41:19The game database site SteamDB has introduced a new filter enabling players to exclude games developed using generative AI.
For the past year, Steam has required developers to disclose their use of generative AI during game submission, specifying how the technology was employed. This information is displayed in the "AI Generated Content Disclosure" section on a game's Steam page.
For instance, the AI disclosure for *Outlast: Trials* on Steam includes a message from the developers: "Throughout the development of our game, we may leverage AI-based tools to assist our team with content creation. Rest assured that the content you experience within the game reflects the creativity and hard work of our team. Examples may include images and/or posters we utilize in certain environments."
This information allows players who may have reservations about the use of generative AI in game development to make informed purchasing decisions.
While Steam's store doesn't currently offer a built-in filter for AI-generated content, SteamDB has now implemented this feature.
A new "AI Content Disclosure" tag on the SteamDB website reveals that over 4900 games utilize AI-generated content, including titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Stellaris, Final Combat, and inZOI.
Given that developers not using generative AI are not required to disclose this fact, and failure to disclose when using it violates Steam's terms of service, it's reasonable to assume that games not on the list either haven't employed generative AI or the developers have chosen not to disclose its use (thereby risking action from Steam).
SteamDB users can append '&tagid=-1368160' to the end of their URL to filter out games that have disclosed using generative AI.
For example, SteamDB currently lists 2186 demos for the ongoing Steam Next Fest. Applying the filter removes 92 demos whose developers have declared the use of generative AI.
