Mario Kart World was first teased in January during the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal trailer and received its full unveiling in the dedicated Switch 2 Direct on April 2. Since then, Nintendo has confirmed an extensive roster of both returning and new characters, with nearly every racer from Mario Kart 8 making a comeback, alongside fresh faces.

Game Modes and Features

During the Nintendo Direct, it was revealed that Mario Kart World will launch with four distinct game modes:

• Grand Prix: The classic cup format with four-track cups and point-based scoring.
• Knockout Tour: A tournament-style mode where low-placing racers are eliminated at checkpoints.
• Free Roam: An open-world mode allowing players to explore and uncover secrets at their own pace.
• Battle Mode: Includes returning favorites like Time Trials, VS Races, Team Races, Balloon Battle, and Coin Runners.

The Direct also introduced new items and playable characters, including classic enemies like Goomba, Spike, and Cow. New items such as the Coin Shell and Ice Flower will add fresh strategies for players. For the first time in the series, Mario Kart World will support races with up to 24 participants, with 4-player split-screen and 8-player wireless play.
