Balatro Creator LocalThunk Chooses Anonymity Amidst Game's Soaring Success

The indie game Balatro has taken the gaming world by storm, achieving remarkable success and accolades in 2024.  However, the game's creator, known only as LocalThunk, has chosen to remain anonymous, prioritizing privacy over public recognition.

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Playstack's communications director, Wout van Halderen, shed light on LocalThunk's anonymity.  Contrary to speculation about a calculated "Banksy" style move, van Halderen explained that LocalThunk simply desires to be "left alone to make games and live life." This decision is understandable, given the potential for online harassment that developers often face.

Despite shunning the spotlight, LocalThunk has occasionally shared insights about Balatro's development.  The game's unexpected success, starting as a small project among friends and quickly generating over $600,000 in its first few hours, has surprised even its creator.  LocalThunk also humorously acknowledged Balatro's numerous awards, including Best Indie Game at the Golden Joystick Awards, Outstanding Achievement for an Independent Game at the D.I.C.E. Awards, and Game of the Year at the Game Developers Choice Awards, in addition to nominations at The Game Awards 2024. Latest Game Information

Capitalizing on its popularity, Balatro is expanding into merchandise with a unique playing card deck.  Available for pre-order at $16, the deck includes the standard 52 cards plus four signature Balatro Jokers: Joker, Juggler, Blueprint, and Gros Michel.  This venture follows previous successful collaborations with other games, featuring card skins inspired by titles like Cult of the Lamb, Shovel Knight, Critical Role, Fallout, Assassin's Creed, and Slay the Princess.
