Scalebound, a dragon-themed action RPG originally slated for an Xbox One and PC release in 2017, was ultimately cancelled by Microsoft.  Director Hideki Kamiya later acknowledged the cancellation was due to PlatinumGames' inexperience with Unreal Engine and a lack of knowledge regarding online game development.

Kamiya, now leading the new studio CLOVERS and working on the recently announced Okami sequel, recently shared a video on the studio's Twitter account. The video shows him reminiscing while watching old Scalebound footage. CLOVERS revealed that Kamiya "remains proud" of the game and still hopes to "make it again someday."

In the video, Kamiya remarked that the game "still looks great even now." CLOVERS president Atsushi Inaba added, "I’ve always wanted to do this ever since I first worked with Mr. Kamiya."

Kamiya's passion for the project is evident.  He even publicly tagged Xbox head Phil Spencer on Twitter with a direct plea: "Let's do it, Phil!"  Clearly, the desire to see Scalebound revived isn't limited to Kamiya and Inaba, as numerous fans joined in, tagging Spencer in the replies.

However, Spencer has yet to respond publicly.

In a 2020 interview, PlatinumGames' current CEO, Atsushi Inaba, clarified that the Scalebound IP is "100% owned by Microsoft."  Even if PlatinumGames were eager to revisit the project, they would require Microsoft's approval to proceed.  Inaba also stated that "if the opportunity arises, we would love to go back."
