Retro-Bit Halts Game Releases Amidst Accusations of Plagiarism
2025-02-25 13:36:41Retro-Bit, a company specializing in retro gaming peripherals, replacement consoles, and controllers, has been accused of plagiarism by online users. The company has admitted to using unauthorized fan translations and subsequently halted the release of several games.
Gamer Krokodyl recently revealed evidence suggesting Retro-Bit plagiarized fan translations for at least four retro game releases. The affected titles include 90s classics such as *Gleylancer*, *King of Demons* (known as *Majuu Ou* in Japan), and *Metal Max Returns*. Krokodyl pointed out identical errors in Retro-Bit's versions compared to pre-existing fan translations.
Retro-Bit had previously and publicly stated their commitment to original translation work, claiming they would not utilize existing fan translations and would employ professional translators for their localized releases.
The evidence presented highlights identical mistranslations from Japanese to English in Retro-Bit's releases, matching errors found in prior fan translations. These similarities were so distinct that those familiar with Japanese could reportedly identify the original errors without referring to the source material. Following these accusations, Retro-Bit acknowledged the issue and has temporarily suspended the release of some of its games.
