PirateFi Steam Game Removed for Containing Malware: Players Urged to Reinstall Windows

On February 6th, a game called "PirateFi" launched on the Steam platform.  This low-poly survival title garnered initial positive reception during its brief availability.

However, by February 12th, the game had been removed. Players who downloaded "PirateFi" received notifications from Valve warning them that the game contained information-stealing malware and recommending a full Windows reinstallation as a precautionary measure.

The notification explained that the game developer's Steam account had uploaded versions of the game containing suspected malware.  Anyone who played "PirateFi" during the period these versions were active was potentially affected.

Cybersecurity experts at SECUINFRA Falcon obtained a sample of the malware and identified it as a variant of the Vidar information stealer.  SECUINFRA strongly recommends that affected players assume their sensitive information, such as browser credentials, email logins, cryptocurrency wallet details, session cookies, and confidential files, may have been compromised.

While Steam hasn't officially disclosed the number of affected users, data from SteamDB suggests that up to 1,500 players may have downloaded the malicious game.
