Square Enix has provided encouraging news regarding the development of the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.  Following the successful launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the sequel to the acclaimed Final Fantasy 7 Remake,  the company has offered insights into the ongoing progress of the next installment.

Pre-production for the final chapter began around June 2022 and transitioned into full production shortly after the release of Rebirth in February 2024.  Since then, Square Enix has periodically shared updates, assuring fans of the game's development.

Recent reports from renowned industry insiders suggest the Final Fantasy 7 Remake could potentially arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2, along with other titles from the franchise. While this remains speculation, it adds to the growing anticipation surrounding the series.

In a recent interview with Famitsu, Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase and game director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the project's current status. Hamaguchi expressed satisfaction with the team's progress, stating that development is going 'very well.' He confirmed that the project is on track and hasn't encountered any major obstacles thus far.

While a concrete release date remains undisclosed, Hamaguchi’s positive assessment suggests the game is steadily progressing.  He emphasized that the team is committed to delivering a high-quality experience that meets the expectations of fans worldwide.

Kitase reaffirmed that the story for Part 3 is complete, echoing earlier statements by Hamaguchi in November 2024.  He expressed confidence in the final narrative, anticipating a positive reception from players.

The development timeline for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy provides interesting context.  The original Remake took approximately five years, excluding pre-production, while Rebirth was completed in roughly four years. The faster turnaround for Rebirth can likely be attributed to the reuse of assets from the first game.  The COVID-19 pandemic also impacted development timelines across the industry, and it's possible Rebirth could have been finished even sooner without those global challenges.

Considering this development pace, the third installment could potentially launch as early as 2027.  Similar to its predecessors, the game is expected to be a timed PlayStation exclusive before becoming available on PC and possibly other platforms.  Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth recently expanded its reach with a PC release earlier this year.
