WoW Guild Name Changes Moving In-Game, Leaving Battle.net Shop

2025-03-26 01:55:37

Starting April 22nd, World of Warcraft players will be able to change their guild names in-game for 200,000 gold.  This change comes with the retirement of the paid Guild Name Change service currently available on the Battle.net shop and the in-game store.

The move was discovered by players exploring the Public Test Realm for patch 11.1.5. Blizzard subsequently confirmed the change through a forum post by community manager Linxy. This update effectively eliminates all paid guild services from the World of Warcraft in-game shop.

Previously, guild name changes cost $20, equivalent to the price of a WoW Token.  With the fluctuating gold price of the token, often around 250,000 gold, this in-game change represents a potential cost saving for most players.

While datamined information suggested a limitation of one name change per year per guild, Blizzard’s official announcement omitted this detail. Players will need to wait for the update's release to confirm any restrictions.

This change follows the removal of Guild Realm Transfer and Guild Faction Transfer services from the in-game store in July 2024. With the departure of Guild Name Changes, no paid guild services will remain in the shop.

The April 22nd date strongly suggests the arrival of patch 11.1.5. This aligns with evidence from the PTR's splash screen hinting at the same release date. The implementation of the in-game guild name change further solidifies this prediction, with an official announcement from Blizzard likely imminent.

Guild Masters, who facilitate the name change, can be found in major cities across Azeroth. These NPCs serve as the point of contact for guild leaders seeking to rename their guilds.

This shift to an in-game system offers greater accessibility for players, allowing them to manage their guild names without resorting to real-world purchases.  It also simplifies guild management, consolidating features within the game's interface.

This update arrives after a recent controversy involving a DDoS attack that caused character permadeaths in WoW Hardcore. Blizzard intervened following the community debate and has taken steps to address the issue.
